Who am I?

I was watching Oprah the other day and she was talking to women who had lost themselves somehow. These were mostly Mom's who had given up something important, like a career, to be a Mom. The basis of the show was the women no longer knew who they were. She posed the question to them, "who are you?". When they started saying things like "I'm a Mother" or "I'm a Christian" or "I'm a hairstylist" she would stop them and say, that isn't who you are, that is what you do, or what you believe.

So, my question is... if being a Mom isn't how I can define who I am, then I do I really know who I am ? What is it that defines who we are? I don't know if I really understand what she is saying, since I can't think of ways to describe who I am when you take away those things. What is she trying to get us to realize about ourselves? Does she want us to use words like "I am a caring person" or "I am outgoing", is it parts of our personality that defines us? Or is it something else, and I am missing the point completely?

So now I am asking you... who am I?

That's why you shouldn't watch Oprah. She's evil.

When She asks the question like that I can see why it would be confusing. I am just as confused. I wish I could have watched that show. I don't usually watch TV but this I am sure was interesting.

Maybe this is a thought...
If you didn't have all the responsibilies of "mom", "wife", "hairstylist", etc., what would you do with your time? Would you sleep all day? Would you travel the world? Would you learn to play an instrument? What are the things you WANT or INTEND to do, but never have time? Maybe that will help you get closer to your answer.

Stupid Oprah...

Hey Ash,
When I first read this it had me bothered. As I thought about it more I realized it doesn't matter who Opera thinks you are. You know you are a Daughter and Child of Heavenly father. You are a wonerful mother, wife, sister, daughter and friend. I don't think Opera knows exactly who she is and maybe that wah why she was looking for a different answer than what was given.

A "daughter" and "child of"? Wouldn't they be considered the same thing?
If you can't say you're a "mom", then you can't say you're a "daughter". And if you can't say that, then you can't say you're a "person", so you MUST BE, by reason of elimination, a bunch of cells bouncing around in the universe! I figured it out!
I'm smarter than Oprah.
(Oprah is a LOT of cells bouncing around in the universe...hee hee).
